Digital Humanities: Melville’s Marginalia, Boise State
“Students from technical and non-technical fields combine their knowledge as they work together to develop and apply technical tools to do research on the reading and writing of one of American literature’s greatest authors."
The Digital Humanities Team at Boise State "uses computer-assisted means of analyzing the reading of American author Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick and other writings, and edits the markings and notes inscribed by him into books that survive from his personal library.”
When asked about his experience on the VIP team Melville’s Marginalia, new VIP student Keoni Hayward described the pleasures of understanding the links between author and influence. To know the link between Melville and Shakespeare has helped him “apply that fascination [with influence] to modern authors,” to understand and spot influences at play in contemporary literature. Hayward says, “It is fascinating to learn because it really opens your eyes up to the complexities of penmanship and the beauty of penmanship.”
