Drug Discovery
Goals
To understand the processes by which biological systems especially those producing antibiotics grow in order to maximise the yield
Issues Involved or Addressed
In order to isolate novel antibiotic-producing bacteria from underexplored sites, such the Atacama Desert in Chile, we are employing colour-based dereplication and Hyper Spectral Imaging to identify organisms that synthesise potentially novel bioactive compounds. This project draws together Microbiology, Image Processing and Mathematics students to apply multi-disciplinary skills in overcoming the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.
