Advancing Health and Education through Intelligent, Intuitive, and Immersive Algorithms, User Interfaces, and Wearables
Through this project, students will look to expand the possibilities of immersive user interfaces and human activity recognition algorithms to advance education and health. Students will look at more sophisticated ways to interpret sensor data and provide users with better insight into their daily lives.
Issues Involved or Addressed
Fitness trackers, such as Fitbit and Jawbone UP, have been able to provide users with a more detailed look at their daily lives through measurements taken from a small number of basic sensors and welldesigned smartphone apps. But WE can do BETTER! Through the development of novel wearables and UIs combined with state-of-the-art activity recognition algorithms, we can recognize, predict, and intervene in human activities. Past students have built solutions to advance health through navigation and situational awareness for patients, the visually-impaired and blind, the military, motorcyclists, firefighters, and other emergency response personnel. Other past students have used similar technologies to advance education by designing novel systems that automatically understand hand-drawn homework solutions and automatically monitor and design social networks for young children.
