The Institution

Stony Brook University, widely regarded as a SUNY flagship, is going beyond the expectations of what today's public universities can accomplish. Since its founding in 1957, this young university has grown to become one of only four University Center campuses in the State University of New York (SUNY) system with more than 25,700 students and 2,500 faculty members, and 18 NCAA Division I athletic programs. Our faculty have earned numerous prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Indianapolis Prize for animal conservation, Abel Prize and the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics. The University offers students an elite education with an outstanding return on investment: U.S.News & World Report ranks Stony Brook among the top 50 public universities in the nation. Its membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU) places Stony Brook among the top 62 research institutions in North America. As part of the management team of Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University joins a prestigious group of universities that have a role in running federal R&D labs. Stony Brook University is a driving force in the region's economy, generating nearly 60,000 jobs and an annual economic impact of $6.4 billion. Our state, country and world demand ambitious ideas, imaginative solutions and exceptional leadership to forge a better future for all. The students, alumni, researchers and faculty of Stony Brook University are prepared to meet this challenge.

The Program

The VIP Program at Stony Brook University was launched in Spring 2019 from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The program started with a broad scope to engage students and faculty from all areas of the University. The inaugural teams included faculty mentors from CEAS, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Dental Medicine. Our goal is to expand the program to provide every student of every discipline with the opportunity to participate in a long-term multidisciplinary project that provides a real-world context for course work, shapes career paths, and builds professional, teamwork, and leadership skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Consortium Contributions

The goal of the VIP Program at Stony Brook to provide every student of every discipline with the opportunity to participate in a long-term multidisciplinary project that provides a real-world context for course work, shapes career paths, and builds professional, teamwork, and leadership skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. To provide this capacity, we are building tools to automate program management and to reduce team management overhead so that faculty mentors can focus their efforts on the student experience and the productivity of their team.

VIP Teams

  • Establish a Center for Political Informatics that would include a data repository containing, at a minimum, historical federal election results, election district boundary data, demographic data, cultural data, geographic feature data, and software able to analyze the data to test various political science hypotheses.
  • The project involves the design of innovative scaffolds for hard and soft tissue regeneration. Dr. Marcia Simon is director of the Living Skin Bank and in that capacity has the IRB for obtaining both dermal and dental tissue. Together, we have a program for the design of scaffolds which enable regeneration of (a) teeth and (b) skin. The current project we are proposing is the translation of the...
  • The central goal of this project is to advance our understanding of what it takes to make various large-scale decision-making, computation, optimization and machine learning algorithms 'secure' against network and/or component failures and adversary attacks. The class of algorithms to be considered are those intended to enable the functioning of distributed networks such as sensor networks,...
  • Precision Medicine requires an ever growing Biomedical BigData reference. This growth is particularly striking for pathologies with a genomic basis, like Cancer. Accordingly, NIH/NCI has spearheaded the establishment of interoperable multi-petabyte sized Genomic Data Commons as a data ecosystem that the scientific community, including the citizen scientist, can populate with analytical...
  • The AMMAT team will explore new materials, processes and designs in the realm of additive manufacturing/3D printing.
